At tho Marino Court of Enquiry into fcho ions of tho Ovalau, tho Government Analyst, as tho result of a series of oxperihnonts, gavo evidence that while his opinion was that copra was liablo to spontaneous combustion, it contained 84 per cent, of oil, and fibrous matter soaked in vegetable oii was subject to spontaneous combustion. Tho Court found that it was impossible with any cortainty to determine tho cause of the fire. The evidence pointed to spontaneous combustion of copru. The captain deserved all credit for doing everything possible under tho most trying conditions, most ably assisted by tho officers and crew. Boatswain Larking was specially commended forgoing down tho ventilator to locate tho liro.
