An elderly man named Thos. Wray, a pioneer resident o£ the town, was found dead in a wliare on Ills property, Fitzlierbert, yesterday. Death evidently occurred several days ago. (Deceased possessed a large amount of property in the town and district. He lived alone, and had no relatives in the colony. WELLINGTON, last night.

An emergency, meeting of the shareholders of the Bank of New Zealand was called for three o’clock to-day, to consider the question of banking legislation. The Court of Enquiry into the col-

lision between the steamers Gertie and Queen of the South in broad day light off Kohurangi Point, when both steamers were going in the same direction, gave its decision to-day. The Court found that the Gertie was the overtaking vessel, and Captain Simpson, of that vessel, was ordered to pay air costs of the enquiry, exceptthe costs of the mate of the Queen of the South, who should have called his captain earlier. All certificates Were returned. The costs total £2O CHRISTCHURCH, last night. The criminal sessions of the Supreme Court opened this morning before Judge Denniston. The calendar comprises 14 charges against 14 accused. There are three charges of forgery,,- four of assault, two of indecent assault, one of attempted rape, and two of neglect of children. William McPherson, who pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court, was sentenced to three months for robbery, and Percy John Sheenwood to two years for horse-stealing. True bills were found in the cases of Clias. Hamilton Moir, assault with intent to rob ; Archibald Blue, assault with intent to rob ; and William Powell unlawful carnal knowledge. No bill was returned against William Dillon, for attempted rape.
