Hirst and Bosanquet played freely. The former added about a dozen and touched one to Saunders ; it went high in tho slips, Armstrong effecting a fine catch. Six for 396. Belf followed. Bosanquot made a fine drive for five, sending Sounders over the boundary rail, a spectator catching it. Relf early gave Collins a chance off Laver. Seven for 441. Macalister and Bruce scored freely. Tho former was nearly run out when tho score stood at 23. Runs came slowly, the field ing being keen. Later both commenced to belt Rhodes and Relf about. A double chango of bowling not having effoct, Hirst and Rhodes again wont on, Bruce hit the latter’s first ball to Bosanquet at mid-off. He played a first-class innings marked by all his old elegance. Trott quickly got into double figures, but hit one straight back to Rhodes.
After the tea adjournment Armstrong joined Macalister, but the latter was bowled without a run being added. Three for 116.
Laver and Armstrong wero the noxt partners, both timing Rhodes nicely. Tho latter was batting udmirably, but at 28 had a lifo from Fielder. In the latter's next over Laver was cleverly caught at cover slip by Relf. Four for 172. Armstrong put Rhodes up to Hayward at extra mid-off. Five for 188.
A smart bit of fielding by the wicketkeeper resulted in Ellis being run out, Sis for 188.
Three runs lator Horan was smartly caught at short-slips. Seven for 181. Victoria’s chanco of avoiding a one in* nings defeat was gone. Monfries and Tuckwell partnered, but the former was quickly disposed of at short-slip. Collins followed, but Tuckwell was beautifully taken one handed in the slips.
