FRIENDLY SOCIETIES’ SPORTS.

As with other gatherings, the rain .yesterday marred the success of the Friendly Societies’ gathering at Kaitcratahi ; hut all things considered, the attendance was good, and a pleasant day was spent. The contests .were exciting, and the arrangements throughout were excellent. The chief event of the day was won by. M. Doyle, who was in fine form. The boys’ race under 16 was won by M. Paterson, after a run-off w.ith G. Morris, with whom he tied. G. Wildish finished third. There were 12 'Sfttirters. For the girls’! race under 16 sev e n started, the winner being Katie Morrison, with S. Boyd 2nd, Mrs Faulkner triumphed in the married ladies’ race, with Mrs Schwabe second, and Mrs V. Parsons third ; there were six starters. For the bicycle race, for boys, there were three •entries ; after a fine race O. Morris (from scratch) won, with R. Sheet /(15yds) a good second. The time of "the race was 2.28. All the events for the Conference I-land cap were well contested. In the 100yds, B. Siddells (Byds) was first, with Bigham (9yds) second; time 10 2-sths. Second heat ‘ A. Morris- (syds) 1, M. Doyle (oyds) 2. There.was a grand race for the final, little more than a yard separating the first four. The result was Bigham 1, Doyle 3?- Siddells 3, Morris being fourth. Owing to being peiialised the placed men were sent from the same mark. In the 220yds event M. Doyle (16yds) was the winner, after a fine finish, with Morris second and Bigham third —time 23 4-sths. The third event (140yds) was won by Morris (12yds) with Doyle (18yds) second. There were nine starters, Morris winning comfortably ; Pilcher was coming third, but stopped short. The single ladies’ race was won by S. Boyd, from scratch, with K. Sullivan (10 yds) second, and M. Morris (5 yds) third. ’ This was a very close race. There were six starters. The threelegged race, which was run. in heats, was won by Pilcher Bros., with Witty and Grinlinton second, Doyle and Morris being third. The race for men over 40 was won by P. Maher, from scratch, with Piper, off the same mark, in second place. Dermott, who was given five yards, was the first to finish, hut was disqualified on account of his age. Other starters were Ambridge (scratch). File and Hickey (10yds). Kane (9 yds). The Friendly Societies’ Handicap was won by Piper (syds) with Pufilet (15yds) second. D. Dwyer came in with a- good lead, hut was disqualified for starting from the wrong mark. " The officials’ race wa» won hv Henshaw, with /Young second 'Phc Bridge Handicap was won by Dunning (scratch), with I-larnden /second, and Wells (10yds) third. The time recorded was 23 3-sth. Great interest was taken in the rip-saw competition, which was won by Len. Tate, with Mender second. The run for the “ greasy ” pig was more interesting than these events usually are. The pig was sent off to a good start, and took his pursuers for a run over the hill-side.. There were ten competitors, the successful one 'being Morris, with Hamden as run-ner-up. There were five competitors for the horse-jumping event. It was; not a good day for jumping, as the grass was very slippery, and there were a couple'of “spills,” although fortunately without anyone being hurt. Mr J. M. Gouldsmith acted as" judge, and the first prize was allotted to S. Newman’s Bay Bell the rider of which was L.- Newman McKenzie’s Totangi (Rice) obtained second place, and Neenan’s Bob (J. O'Grady) third. The Committees for the gathering were as follow ’Traffic • Bros. Colebourne, Dwyer, Buscke, Sargisson, Kennedy, Necnan, Georgeson, Dower, and O’Connor. Catering : Bros. R. . Robb, Ambridge, Cox, Kirk, Harrison, Grifien, and File. Ground ; Bros. Holdsworth, Haisman, Humphreys, Cox, Jeune, Stewart Roland, Robb, McKeaguc, Schwabe, Nicholson, Brosnahan and Bcndle. Sports : Howard, Ensor, Seymour Wildish, Hackett, P. Maher, and H. Williams The judges were Bros. H. Williams P.- Maher, and P. Schwabe ; starter Mr Ensor ; handicappcr, Mr Howard Timekeepler, G. Watson ; clerk of the course, W. Hackett; the secretaries being Bros. Ambridge and Robb.
