UNION CRICKET CLUB.

At tho Victoria Domain yesterday afternoon a most successful practice matoh was playod by tho mombers of tho Union Cricket Club with a view of selecting a first eleven to play tho .To Karaka Club at that place on Monday next, the King’s Birthday. Tattersall batted in splendid stylo, hitting a number of boundaries, whilst Rowland, Delaney, and Long were tbe pick of the others. Bowling honors wero equally divided. Subjoined aro the

Common, Shelton and Co.’s team are to be congratulated upon the good all-round form they displayed on Victoria Domain against United yestorday. The old club had by no means a weak side in the field, but were sent to the rightabout in double quick time by the firm’s combination, who had a pair of good bowlers in J. Gibson and Wilßon. Gibson has Beldom bowled better than he did yesterday, and Wilson, who bowled a slow ball, was very steady, keeping a good length, and employing the yorker with effect.. The O.S. and Co,’s eleven wore smart and keen in the field, and thoroughly deserved the win, outplaying their opponents in every department of the game. It is many years since the Gisborne Recreation Ground resounded to the music of the bat meeting the ball, or was occupied by flannelled batsmen, bowlers, and fieldsmen as it was yosterday.- Many years ago this ground was a fine cricket field, rejoicing in a properly laid down turf wicket and splendid outfield. It was also tile-drained, and, in fact, was a firstclass ground. The game yesterday afternoon must have recalled old memories of those palmy days to many old-time players present. There can be no doubt that there is an excellent sward of turf on the Recreation Ground with good, rioh black soil helow. AH that is required to provide a first-class turf wicket there now is rolling and watering, and crioketers will be ploased to hear that an effort is to be made to put the ground in order. The ground is muoh more pleasingly situated than any other in the town, and the rotunda, the spectators on the rustic seats about the ground, and under the grateful shade of the trees, with the strenuous oarsmen pulling up and down the river hard by, made a picture that local cricketers have not Been for years back. J. R, Gardiner, the -well-known Napier player, and a member oj, the I-law-kc’s Bay, ve team which visited Gisborne last season, has joined the staff of tho Gisborne Times, lie, stood umpire at the match"on the Recreation Ground yesterday afternoon, and will later take the field for the United Club. 'Mr W, L. Rees was among the spectators who witnessed thtynatch at tho Recreation Ground yesterday afternoon. As all local cricketers know, this gentleman was a famous player in his day? and was both a Brilliant batsman and a tricky under hand lob .who mado long scores and took many wickets for a great number p£ yearSj It is picas-

ing to know that Mr Rees has by no means lost all interest in' the game at which lie was smell an adept In the course o£ a chat .with ,O.S. and

Co.’s captain (G, K. Pasley) yesterday afternoon, the veteran generously oflered to provide a [turf wicket on the Recreation Ground in time for next (Thursday's play, Needless to say, the oiler was accepted with alacrity. It should he exceedingly gratifying and encouraging to pre-

sent day players to. find an old cricketer of Mr Roes’ experience taking such an active interest in the game.
