A new, agreement has drawn up under .which buyers agree to pay, Is, and brokers a labor charge of one penny per hide, in return lor concessions of better preparation anil methods of auctioning hides. Business will be resumed on Friday. The Herald, referring to the recent bye-election, and the evidence of the •growing dissatisfaction ol the Labor party with the .Government, foreshadows a possible defeat over the motion that Mr Carruthcrs gave notice of last night. In the Council'the Attorney-Gene-ral announced that the Government were considering the appointment of a subsidiary Arbitration Court to deal with coalmin ng disputes at .Newcastle. The Assembly,- dealing with the estimates, made a number of reductions, including £450 off the .acting Chief Justice’s salary and £3OO oft the Supreme .Court judge’s allowances.
HOBART, October 29. It cost £29,000 to stamp out smallpox at Launceston. The Council has passed a Bill authorising womanhood suffrage. ( ’ In the Assembly the Premier moved the second reading of the Occupancy Tax Bill, which embraces all householders. Exception was taken to the multitude of lodgers who would escape the provisions of the Bill. The •motion was rejected by a majority of one. The Premier thereupon adjourned the House. , MELBOURNE. In the Council the Factories Act was re-committed, A clause was added, exempting members of an employer’s family, related at the first or second degre by blood or marriage, and shearers will be exempted from the operation of the Act, The Assembly subsequently dealt with the Bill and accepted the Council’s amendment limiting its duration to two years, but disagreed with a number of otherdipjThe Bill was returned to th'(£iv.Cpu§eil, which postponed cohsi'derafioh until to-day.
