At the meeting of the sustentatiou fund committee of the Otago-Southland section of the Presbyterian Church, nn equal dividend for tho year of .£197 2s 7d was declared.
COAL MINE CLOSED,
Tho Walton Park coal mino ut Green Island, after being in operation for 40 yoars, has been closed down owing to the difficulties of working it. TWO MINERS FINED.
Two men, employed in the Allanadale coal mice, wero each fined £3 and costs at Palmerston to day, on charges of having unlawfully used dyoamite to destroy fish in Shag river. Accused pleaded guilty, having been caught red-handed.
A FATALITY. Joseph Kurcfsi, twelve years, died at tho hospital fiorn the effects of a wound from a poa rifle, sustained about a fortnight ago. He was leaning on a pea rifle, whou a younger brother playfully pulled »he trigger. The charge exploded, and the bullet lodged in the boy’s abdomen. An inquest was not deemed necessary.
RAISING MONEY. In discussing tho balance-sheet in the City Council, tbe Mayor said that before Government started to raise money locally, monpy could bo borrowed by local bodies at 4 per cent above par. Since then, howevor, there was difficulty in obtaining money at par.
