American cattlemen have constituted an independent packing company with a capital of five million dollars, with the object of combatting tho efforts of the beef trust to keep down the prices of livo stock at- auction sales in tho Western States.

High Commissioner Jackson and the Premier conferred on the Kanaka question. It transpired that at the beginning of the month the Government resident at tho Solomons gave notice that the recruiting of islanders for sugar plantations and the return of boys whose time had expired would no longer bo allowed. This is a very serious matter to Queensland, more particularly, as trouble wili probably will probably ensue when tho Solomon islanders now in Queensland desiro to return. The Premier communicated with the Imperial authorities, and was informed that tho High Oommisioner was coming to Queensland to deal with the subject. It is understood as a result of to day’s conference that the recruiting and returning of islanders will be immediately resumed.
