The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING GISBORNE, OCTOBER 29, 1903.
An impounding notice in regard to tho Gisborne pound appears in this issue. A bay horse lost last evening is advertised for, The Okitu factory exhibited some very choice bacon and preserved meats at the show yesterday. , IS; At a recent wedding the groom forgot tho ring, and tho ceremony had to bo performed with a 9-carat hoop belonging to one of the groomsmen.
A well-known Colonial authority on sheep, who was present at tho Show yesterday, said that the fat sheep were far in advance of those shown at Hawke’s Bay last week.
Ia connection with Me J. H. Ormond’s exhibits at the Agricultural Show yesterday, wo might mention that the whole of the vehioles shown were manufactured at Mr Ormoud’s Gisborne Factory. At the matinee to bo given this afternoon by D’Arc's Pantomino and Marionette Company, children will be admitted to the first and second seats for Is, and to the pit for 6d. Great interest was taken yesterday in the potato exhibits at tlio show. The ptizo was won by Mr A. F. Kennedy with tino samples of tubers. Mr W. F. Kine, who tools second prize, exhibited only ono yariety, and believing that had he included different varieties of iris growing he could have won first place, he now backs up his opinion with a friendly challenge.
At the Agricultural Show yesterday the exhibils of the Te Karaica Sawmill Company and Gisborne Sheepfarmers’ Association attracted a groat deal of attention, and gave visitors a good idea of the advance that has been made in local industries during the year. The exhibit of the Wellington Woollen Company also excited a great deal of admiration. Among tbe exhibits on the show ground of great interest to sheepfarmers was tlio Rangalira wool-press patented by Mr E. Skillicorn. Tito press is so contrived as to allow a great amount of woik to be done in a short time as compared with tho old style of press. It is substantially made, and should meet with a good demand from pastoralists who desire quick, economical, and efficient work.
The championship tournament under the auspices of the New Zealand. Dawn Tennis Association is to be held this year in Napier. We understand that the Hawke’s Bay Association, with that Wellknown enthusiast Mr Barry Keesing as honorary secretary, have arrangements wol) in haDd, and that the success of the meeting is assured. Southern playors are showing great interest, and a team from Australia is expeeted to take part. It is to bo hoped our local representatives will make a good showing for Gisborne. We are glad to see that tho foyerty Bay Agricultural Society arc following the example of other societies throughout the colony by holding a patado of the stock on the ground. At all important exhibitions a parade is looked upon as ono of tho chief hems on the programme for tbe People s Day, and it is pleasing to note that the local Society intend to be right up-to-date in this respect. The parade yesterday was hardly as representative as wo should have liked to have seen it, but it Was a beginning, and no doubt next year a njiuch better display will be made. As it was the jCojnmittee were the recipients of much pongratulation from the public, who were glad of the opportunity of viewing the exhibits as a whole, and this can only be done by holding a parade. We would suggest to the Show Committee that next year in regard to certain exhibits it should be made compulsory that those showing tbe,m shall make provision for inchiding Ihpirstapk ia the parade- 1
