The Borough Council sat last night until half-past eleven, the. latter portion of the time as a Charitable Aid Board. Luncheon will he served at the Trocadero to-day from 11 o’clock, and .dinner from 6 o clock this c\en•ing. Mr G. W. Sampson, Chief Postmaster at Gisborne, lias received notice of his transference to Groymoutb.
The many friends of Mr and Mrs A. J. Massey will sympathise with them In the death of their youngost child, through pneumonia following an attack of measles. “Wo built both bridges and almost drove the population out of tho borough,” Baid the Mayor last night, referring to the County Council's objection to agree to the proposed new bridge. At tho Magistrate’s Court yesterday several local residents and country settlers were fined £2 and costs for failing to furDish returns uuder tho Land and Income Assessment Act. Mr J. W. Nolan appeared for the Commissioner. “ The Kaiteratabi bridgo was one of the last put up iu this district,” said Cr Lysnar at the Council meeting last night, “ and it is absolutely rotten now. V/nere timber is so dear wo should try and get steel bridges.” The Borough Council last night decide' 1 that Mr Hay bo asked to come and report on water and drainage without waiting for Mr Reynolds’ report. An amendment to that effect was carried on the casting vote of the Mayor. Tho tender will leave twice for the Zealandia this evening, at 7 and 11 p.m. As it is expected there will bo a good many leaving by tho last boat, ladies and children are advised to go out by tho 7 o’clock boat.
Yesterday morning Mr W. Heany, of Messrs Williams and Ivettlo’s staff, officiated for tho first time as auctioneer, at the sale of tho property in theestuloof George Goldsworthy. Mr Heany made a splendid auctioneer, uiid kept the proceedings brisk throughout.
“ Why, there is not ono of us at this table understands it,” said Cr Lysnar at t e Council meeting last night in regard to the subject of rating on unimproved values.
The question of whether or not th° borough should adopt the reutul or unim* proved values for the basis of rating was discussed at the Council meeting last nigbt. It was finally resolved to havo the rating basis the same as usual Dext year, with Mr Robinson as valuator. The Borough Council last night decided to adopt the usual comae in regard to the collection of the dog tax, taking £25 from tho Cook County Council, and that body having charge of the cuiiectiuu.
To-day there will be only one delivery of letters by. letter-carriers, commencing at '■) a.m. To-morrow, ■the usual deliveries will be made. Persons dosiring to' call at the office f Q r their letters should give notice beforehand.
“ It is impossible to prevent the modest cottage from being under the shoulder of tho more effluent building,” said Cr Whinray at the Council meeting last night, referring to the protest against the shifting of tho°)ittlo shop at the corner of Koebuek and Palmerston roads to Mill road. "It is in better repair and more sanitary than many within a stone’s throw from this room. The insinuation is most uncalled for.”
Mr F. Bousfield arrived from fhe East Capo yesterday with a mob of cheep from Mr H. Campbell's property for Messrs Nolson Bros.’ works. Mr Bousfield was fiyo weeks on the road from the time he loft until ho returned to Gisborne. He states that for a period of fourteen days rain fell every day' at the rate of ono inch per day.
Tho judgos of the sheep and cattle yesterday commented on the small number of entries received for a number of tho classes. One of them stated that after driving round ' the district and seeing everything looking so prosperous, he fully expected to see much keener competition than there was in many of the classes. A financial statement laid before tho Borough Council last night showed that the Council was up to tho full limit of overdraft, and on the estimate given would be £4OO short of revenue to meet expenditure. It was explained that the purchase of land had largely accounted for the position. In reply to Cr Johnston, tho Mayor said that probably they would in time have to raise a loan of £IO,OOO or £12,000 by special order to clear off the old loan and to pay for tho land. In tho meantime he said Councillors must not bo asking for funds for reports on this, that-, and the other subject. Mr J. H. C. Hunter, representative of Messrs Massey, Harris, and Co., Ltd., is now in Gisborne, and will remain until the 31st inst. He will be in attendance at the Company’s exhibits at the Show Ground to-day, and desires to meet intending purchasers of farming machinery. To those who already have reapers and binders, mowers, etc., of the Company's manufacture, he takes this opportunity of acquainting them that a large and well-as-sorted stock of duplicate parts will always be held in Gisborne. Mr Jas. Brown, engineer, now has them in his charge, whilst Mr H. Currie will be pleased to supply farmers with catalogues and prices of machinery, etc.
