The ladies of Gisborne will be interested to learn that Mr Lee Choi, an importer of Chinese silks, has started business in Gisborne, next the Salvation Army, Barracks. The annual picnic of the Mutual Improvement Society is to be hold on November 9th,_on the property of Mr W. Acland Hood, who has Kindly granted the use of his picturesque blace for the occasion.
T-iic Secretary of Bay 'Turf Club (Mr E. L. Maude) reminds owners, trainers, and jockeys that .all passes must be obtained from the Secretary, at his office, on or before Wednesday, the 28th in-st., as no tickets will be issued on the course.
Tbo banks in Gisborne have decided to rnako a cliargo of Is auch irrespective of amount for collecting unaccepted orders drawn on local merchants and others. The charge is to come into forco on and after the 10th November. Wo unders and that this practice is in vogue in most of tho other towns in the colony.
A line mob of cattle will pass through Gisborne this morning on their way to Te Aute. The mob comprises 200 three-year-old bullocks from Mr T. S. Williams’ station, Tuparoa. They are in charge of Mr Woodford, the experienced drover who has - in past seasons had charge of so many large mobs of cattle. This lot are the first of the season to be taken through.
At the Poiico Court yederday morning an elderly mau named William Adams was charged with having, on or about May Ist, at Gisborne, with infect :to defraud, sold a composition, to >.vit, beeswax, for .£'2 10s to Common, Shelton and Co. Accused, for whom Mr L. Bees appeared, pleaded not guilty. On tho application of Sergeant Siddelis, who stated that it was necessary to obtain a witness from Auckland, Adams was remanded until 10 am. on Friday. Bail was allowed, self in £SO, with one surety of £25.
Hearing of tbo charge of cattle stealing preferred against four young Motu settlers was concluded at the Police Court yesterday morning before Mr Barton, S.M. After hearing evidence for the defence His Worship said that since the adjournment cn Saturday he had gone carefully into the evidence of tho case. He bad carefully considered the matter, aud his duty was to say whether in his opinion there was sufficient to put the accused persons formally, on their trial. In his opinion there was. It was not for him to comment on the evidence at this stage further than to say there was a case to go to a jury. Accused were committed for trial at the next sitting of tho Supremo Court, bail being allowed, each in £SO, with one surety at £25,

Captain Edwin telegraphed yesterday : “• Moderate westerly winds ; glass fall ; poor tides.” At the Poiico Court yesterday a fust offender for drunkenness who did not appear was fined 18s and costs 2s. The Gisborne portion of the San Frau-' c sco mail, will arrive hero to-morrow by the Zetilandij. Tha Matawhero School children, attended by their teachers, spent a pleasant day yesterday on the sands of tee Waikanae beach. At 10.30 this morning sharp Messrs Williams and Kettle will sell the stock of furniture, etc., in the bankrupt estate of George Goldsworthy. In connection with the “ lolantha ” season wo understand that the management have space for 250 seats at 2s 6d 'in the back of the hall, while the gallery will hold 300 as Is. Heat 3 for all parts of the house will be on sale at Mr Miller’s.
The racehorse The Rioter dropped dead on the training track yesterday. Mr E. V. Lnttrell, veterinary surgeon, hold a post mortem on the animal, and found the cause of death was failure of. the heart’s action. Mr Wright, the owner, will be a heavy loser, as the horse was shaping well for his engagements at the forthcoming races.
The judgment of His Honor Mr Justice Cooper in the appoc.l from tho decision of Mr W. A. Barton, S.M., in tho Turanganui Hotel case, which was heard and argued before His Honor at the last sitting of the Court, of Gisborne, was read in tbs Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning by Mr W. A. Barton. The appeal was dismissed with £5 5s costs.
