AN IMPORTANT CASE.

Per Press Association. Wellington, last night. The persona arrestod in connection with tho raid on the Olympia Gymnastic Club on an allegation that gambling waß carried on there appeared before the Court this morning, and pleaded not guilty. They were, remanded until Friday. Mr Hancock, the American electrical expert whom the Government has brought to New Zealand, has arranged to prolong his stay in the colony until Christmas. He will spend a month in tho South Island. He hopes to furnish his report to the Government before ho returns to San Francisco. The Appeal Court gave judgment to-day in a caso from last session, tho Mayor of Lower Hutt Borough v. the Mayor of Wellington. In accordance with the Public Works Act the city was assessed for a portion of tho cost of a new bridge, but objected to pay on the grounds that it was not adjacent, as there are several local bodies intervening, .the bridge being nine miles away. A majority of the Court— Judges Denniston, Edwards, and Cooper—were of the opinion that the city is adjacent within the meaning of the Act, while tho Chief Justice and Judge Williams dissented on tho ground that adjacent means continuous. Notice of appeal to the Privy Council was given.
