“IOLANTHE.”

It is quite unnecessary to remind our readers that to-morrow is the opening night of the “ lolanthe ” season, nor is it necessary to say anything to draw the people to the theatre. Public interest is so much ■centred in this .production of the amateurs that bumper houses should he assured for the whole of the season. Although very large audiences arc expected, especially on the two Show nights, the management should have no difficulty in finding room for tlicir patrons, for the extra seating accommodation provided in the theatre should he ample to meet the requirements of the largest Gisborne audience. On Saturday evening, a dress rehearsal of “ lolanthe ” was given, at which our representative was present. The members of the Gisborne Amateur Operatic Socieey have been working very hard for the past few months, with the result that the principals arc thoroughly at home in their work, while the chorus has attained a high degree of excellence, '(’he orchestra, under the guidance of Mr E. N. Sidebottom, renders the accompaniment with judgment, and in the interpretation of the operatic music is highly successful. The staging is most effective, and the lighting something q'ui,te out of the ordinary, while the whole production deserves to be highly praised. Its success speaks volumes for the’ patience and perseverance of those leading .spiries who so enthusiastically set to work to train the performers and triumphantly overcame the numerous obstacles inseparable in such an undertaking. Saturday night’s rehearsal went with a swing that reflected credit on everyone concerned, and assured the success of the lolanthe ” season.
