(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, last night. John D. Anderson, aged about 70, died apparently from an overdose of laudanum taken to procure sleep. The remarks by Sir Joseph Ward in respect to 'an Auckland institution proposing to raise the rates of ■interest with a view to forcing the hand of tiie Government, evidently referred to the .Auckland Savings Bank. It is a fact that the question of rate of interest has not been even discussed by the Board of this institution for some years, and it is difficult to trace whence the story had its origin. THAMES, last night. A meeting of the school committees vof the Thames district was largely attended. It was decided to approach the Education Board and ask them to establish a technical 'and| manual school at the Thames. DUNEDIN, last night. At the Education Board meeting, it was reported that 88 teachers of this education district were affected by the reductions coming into operation on January Ist. These include four at £SO, several at £45, and others at from £35 down to a few shillings. The Board has decided to do away with pupil teachers in two cases, and also to send a strong protest to the Education Department against the general reductions. GREYMOUTH, last night. The only oil launch or other vessel that has left the Coast this year that is missing is the Toroa, which left the Grey for Wanganui,..coal laden on August 10, and has never been heard" of.
