THE LICENSING BILL.
PROTEST FROM TEMPERANCE PARTY. Per' Press Association. Wanganui, last night. At a public mooting of temperance sympathisers to-night the new Licensing Bill was strongly condemned, and the following resolution carried unanimously : “ That tuis large gathering of temperance sympathisers records its strong protest against tho clauses of the new Licensing Bill, which make provision for the mayors of boroughs and chairmen of counties to be ex-officio members of a licensing committee, and makes it possible for liquor dealers to be elected to sit upon the licensing bench ; takes away tho powor of the people to vote to reduce licenses without restoring discretionary power to licensing committees; increases tho number of liquor bars ; attempts to extond tho timo between the taking of local option votes, and attempts to force prohibition to a degree not contemplated by the nolicense party, and in our judgment exceeding the right of tho Legislature to interfere with the private habits of the people ; that the resolution be sent tp the member for the district."
