HAWKE’S BAY SHOW.

(Per Press Association.) Napior, last night. Tho A. and P. Society’s Spring Show opened to-day in fine weathor, though rather unsettled. The Show promises to be tho most successful in the history of the Society, the entries totalling over 2300, au increase of over 500 compared with last year. All classes are well represented, Shorthorn cattle being particularly strong. At the Show tho champion grade Shorthorn bull fell to Nelson Bros, i Ayrshire bull, 8. Standen; cows, W. Luxford [ Shorthorn bull, Mount Herbert estate ; Lincoln ram, Tiios. Tanner; owe, Douglas McLean ; Shropshire Down ram, W. A. Beecroft; ewe, Nelson Bros.; Southdown ram, Nelson Bros.: ewe, Nelson Bros.

Later.—The attendance was a record for a first day, visitors coming from all parts of the colony. In the number and quality of the exhibits the Show was far and away the best ever held in the district, and in the opinion of visitors are of the best of the kind yot seen in the polpny. Tho feature of the Show was the Shorthorn cattle, of which there was a magnificent display, the judge, Mr J. J. Bayliss, of New South Wales, stating they were the best lot he had seen. In this section there were exhibitors from Taranaki, Rangitikei, and Wairarapa. There was a verv fine lot of draught horses on the ground, honors being fairly evenly divided between Messrs W. J. and A. F. Douglas, and R. D. D. McLean, the two first named breeders securing the two championships with McPherson Grant and Jean Donaldson 11. respectively. The Messrs Douglas also gained the thoroughbred sire ebampionsbip with San Fran. In Shorthorn cattle Mount Herbert Estate secured both charnpionships, that for bulls going to Clifton Coronation, bred by A, J. Simpson, Victoria, and for cows to Bolinda Duchess of Derrimut, 2161b5, bred by Sir Rupert Clarke, Victoria. Messrs Nelson Bros, won the championship for polled Angus bull. In Ayrshires Mr A. Standan won the bull championship with Duke of York, and Mr S. W. Luxford the cow championship with Jenny McGregor. Mr S. R. Lancaster won both championships for Jersey cattle The sheep were a grand lot all through, all sections being well filled. Competition was very strong, all the leading breeders in the Island being represented. Mr T.. Tanner won the Lincoln ram championship, and Mr R. D. D. McLean, that for Lincoln ewes. Mr R. D. D. McLean secured both the championships for' English’’ Leicester. In Shropshire Downs Mr W. A. Bee'croft secured the championship for ram, and Messrs Nelson Bros, that for ewe. Messrs Nplson Bros, gained both championships for South Downs. The points prize for Lincolns fell to Mr T. Tanner, Border Leicesters to Messrs Nelson Bros., English Leicesters to Mr R. D. D. McLean, Romney Marsh to Mr W. B. Allen, Shropshire Downs to Messrs NeLon Bros., and South Dowds to Messrs Nelson Bros. Mr R. D. D. McLean gained the points prize (or cattle classes other than dairy, and Mr S. R. Lancaster the points prize for the dairy cattle classes. The hunters’ competition was won by Jas. Ooombes’ Duchess, Miss Reynolds’ King Jimmy being second, and A, Groome’a Dick Turpin third,
