A special meeting of the Harbor Board was held yesterday, there being present : Messrs .Townley (Chairman), Hepburn, Clark, Siev.wright, Matthewson, Whinray, and Captain Tucker. Three tenders were received for the extension of the western training wall, as followsP* McLaughlin and Co., £16,624 13s 4d ; Mackrell and Colley, £17,208 5s 4d ; J. McLean and Sons, £17,490 ; the latter also sent a letter stating that they could considerably reduce their tender if the proportions of cement were reduced... Tin- proportions were 2 of sand and if of stone to 1 of cement. McLean s excluded the sand altogether, sayring that it was lost, and termed the ’quantities 1 in 3. Mr Hepburn : Cement is very much cheaper now than it was when tenders were previously called. The Secretary: No; my quotations are exactly the same Irom McKwen and Son—Bs 9d to 0s 6d per cask at Home, to which duty, freight, etc., 1 has to !be added.
