EDUCATION BOARD.
MATTERS AFFECTING GISBORNE '((Special to Times.) Napier, last night. At tho moating of the Education Board Pakarae’s application for the payment of a teacher was deferred until information as to how many children can attend is at band.
To Arai.—Miss Baigant’s resignation was accepted. Tokomaru.—Miss Burness appointed teacher.
Waipiro.—ln rognrd to the master’s application for transference to a school where thero is a teachor’r, residence, it was decided to roquest him to apply for another school in the usual way. Waorenga-a-hika.—Parent to be informed that under the circumstances, the master can put tho child back a standard. Whatatutu. —Settlors’ letter intimating that they do not want to bo put under the Native Department, is deferred.. The allocation of the building grant is to be considorod at a special meeting on Monday eveniug, 2nd November, provided the Department have forwarded the amount to bo placed at the Board’s disposal. All applications for new Bohools are to bo considorod after that date.
James Meorby waited on the Board as a deputation of the Kiritaki Committee to draw attention to tho urgent necessity of increasing accommodation. Tho school building only contained space for 35 pupils, whereas there avo now 70 scholars, and more were expected. Tho windows wore continually open to provide ventilation, and inconsequence the children frequently suffered from colds. Additional accommodation was also required for the teacher, who was living by himself, thero not .being sufficient room for his wife and family, who were living at Gisborne, —Consideration was deferred till the allocation of the building grant was made. The Board's solicitor forwarded the opinion that the School Committees came within the provisions of tho Workmen’s Compensation for Accidents Apt,- and that they were liable jointly, not* severally, but he was of opinion that if an accident occurred the Board would be primarily liable.
