AMATEUR BOXING
UNSCIENTIFIC AND BRUTAL' EXHIBITIONS*
By, Electric ,Telegraph—Per Press Association—Copyright. SYDNEY, Oct, 3. The Daily Telegraph, commenting on the boxing contests,; says that Harriott and McKellar: were more than ordinarily skilful boxers, hut irresistible sustained rushes of their Maoriland opponents completely dis, organised them and reduced the engagement to a matter of the survival of the Attest in force and capacity, for taking punishment. The visitors proved superior in both respects. Taylor and Griffin are fighters, instinctively, but lack the advantage available to New South Welshmen of opportunity to learn the art from competent teachers. (Describing the middle-weight contest, the Telegraph says Griffin was evidently, determined to do or die at short order.. He made a cyclonic dash at the Welshman, and kept going at a fierce pace. Harriott accepted the challenge, and fairly, rolled into the enemy d The battle became a hurricane, amidst the greatest excitement, till he promiscuously swung his right and bumped Harriot in the,ear and floored him, Another weighty right struck him on the’ temple and again he went to the lloor and remained there, while the timekeeper counted him out. The (bout, which was a merry one, lasted but 53 seconds. The heavy-weight contest was equally exciting. The men hurled, swung, and jabbed with out the faintest effort at defence.. When the first round terminated they were so engrossed, that they delivered blows after the bell sounded. The second round saw McKellar disorganised and eager to clinch. Taylor was deadly in earnest, and refused to provide shelter, and at the end of > the third round the referee lfqd no hesitation in adjudging Taylor the winner., . Thte decision met with noisy endorsement by the crowds
