COMMERCIAL.

The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, report having held a clearing sale at Matawhero on account of Messrs James and John MoFarlane. There was a very large attendance of buyers, and the sale went with a good swiDg from start to finish. 11 Our sale was confined to horses, plant, and implements, and we report as follows : Draught horses were in great demand, and we sold at from 1130 10a to £B6. A two-year-old filly, good sort, made £35. Hacks sold at from £ll 10s to £l7 10s. The implements were a useful lot, and in good condition. The Fielding and Piatt 9£ bb. h.p. oil engine made £205, the double-bagger chaffcutter £42, doublelurrow plough £l3 10s, disc harrows £ll 103, roller £l3 10s, buggy £ls ss, and other implements and plant made fair times values. ..

“ Our next sale will be held at Matawhero yards on Thursday next, October Bth. At present we have an entry of over 2000 sheep, and we might draw farmers’ attention to the fact that with the recent bountiful warm rain a flush of spring and summer feed is assured! Bearing in mind the large area of bush coming down, it is safe to estimate that with an average crop of turnips from 200,000 to 300,000 sheep will be required for stocking new country, and we anticipate that againßt many of these orders the reply ‘ not obtainable ’ will have to be written, so that it appears to ns to be good business for those who have the room to buy when they can. It is hardly probable that any surplus will be available from Hawke’s Bay. Out branch there inform us that they have sold privately from 70,000 to 80,000 sheep for delivery oS shears and after weaning, at prices ranging from 14s for wethers off shears to 11s for five-year-old ewes. We may mention that a large number of these ewes have been purchased for Canterbury. The certainty of sheep .being scarce both here and in Hawke’s Bay behoves people anticipating their requirements throughout the coming season."
