AUCKLAND NEWS.

(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, last night.; An application for a recount of votes on the Sunday tram question came before tlio City Council last night. In view of the small majority in favor and the large number of informal votes, the matter was referred to the Finance Committee. The City Council have decided to ask Mr Mestayer to report on tho question of city drainage. The decrease in tho Customs returns for the past month is attributable to the fact that not a single cargo boat, with the exception of the Aparima from Calcutta, arrived here from ports beyond the colonies. For the quarter just closed the net Customs revenue amounted to about £1G3,025, and this, compared with £1G4,012 for the same period of last year, shows a decrease of £972. Some four or five large cargo steamers should arrive during October, and there should be a noticeable increase in the next returns.
