COOK MEMORIAL MOVEMENT.
(To the Editor Gisborne Times,
Sir,—ln reply to the remarks of the mayor aim Mr Joyce, “ that the Cook memorial monument should not be stuck upon a hill, but should be placed in the centre of tile town Where it could be seen,” I might 'state for the information of the public, that the intention of the promoters was to mark the actual landing-place of Captain Cook, or as near thereto as possible, and upon tins understand ng subscriptions were invited. The site kindly given •by Captain Tucker is on tile first knoll of Kaiti hill, directly over the landing-place (about a quarter way; up the hill), and at a sufficient elevation to be seen front steamers in tlie hay, from the Waikanac and Kaiti beaches, or from tlie wharf and general post office. .The memorial is a national one, and it’is looking at the matter in far too parochial a sense to say that it should be placed in the centre of tlie town. In adhering to their original proposal, I feel sure that the Committee .will have the support of all who have the slightest regard and veneration for the historical associations attached to tlie first visit of Captain Cook ,to our shores.—l am, etc., ,W. J. P. GAUDIN, lion. Secretary.;
