WANGANUI, last nighty An importment judgment affecting ship-owners was given by the Chief Jnstice this morning in the Supreme Court. The case was that of Alfred Hawthorne, of Raetahi, storekeeper, against Hatrick and Co., proprietors, the claim being for damage to goods by water, caused by a steamer striking a snag [in the Wanganui ; river. The defence was that the boat .‘note had been issued with the conditions that the owners.accepted no responsibility for damage to cargo from water caused by the vessel becoming injured by contact with snags etc. His Honor held that as plaintiff had received no notice of the conditions of the boat note the shipowners were liable for the damage sustained. Judgment was given for £95 and costs. Messrs Chapman and Wray appeared for plaintiff, and Mr Eitzherbert for defendant. Execution was stayed for 14 days to admit of an appeal. ______
