(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, last night. Obituary: Mr John Chambers, of Messrs Chambers and Son ; Mr J. W. Jiewson, building contractor, ex-city Councillor, aged 56. Mass meetings hold on Saturday and Sunday passed resolutions against Sunday trams. Sermons were preached in several of the churches, mostly against Sunday trams, but the Roman Catholic generally were favorable. There is intense interest in the poll to be taken on the question next Wednesday. Constable Joyce, when about to arrest a man on a charge of drunkenness at I J ahi fell. Ho was found dead, with the handcuffs by his side. There were no signs of a struggle. The inquest showed that death was due to heart' disease.
Christchurch, last night,
The contents of Mr W. H. P. Roodroffe’s house, destroyed by fire yesterday, were insured for £2OOO in the London and Lancashire office. The building, the property of the Hon. Mr Wigram, was insured in the same office for £9OOO.
A fire occurred this morning at the residence of Mr William E. Mills, St. Albans, and damage estimated at LSOO was sustained. The building was insured for LBOO in the Northern Insurance Company, and the contents for L 250 in the South British. OAMARU, last night.
The Harbor Board to-day resolved to proceed with the erection of wharf accommodation for large steamers and dredging, entailing a cost of L 15,000, and to have a Bill prepared for submission to Parliament giving the necessary authority.
