BONUS TO IRON INDUSTRY.

It is understood that the Bonus Commission on the casting vote of Mr Kingston approve of paying a bonus to develop the iron industry. Mr Watson, Labor leader, and other members, present a minority report, urging that ten to fifteen por cent duty will suffice to establish the industry. Mr Deakin has received a great many congratulatory telegrams, including messages from Canada and England.

OPIUM-SMOKING. A deputation representing forty social and political societies waited on Sir W. Lyne and sought total prohibition of opium used in smoking. Sir W. Lyne replied that he had no power under the Customs Act which recognised opium by placing a duty from 30s to 60s per pound on it. He would consult his colleagues in reference to tho passing of legislation. New South Wales in 1901 imported 18,554 pounds of opium. Victoria 7725 pounds, Queensland 17,784 pounds, and other States small quantities.
