GISBORNE TENNIS CLUB
ANNUAL MEETING.
Tho annual general meeting of the Gisborne Tennis Club was held in Townley’s Hall on Saturday evening. There was a fair attendance of members, the ladies being in tho majority. Mr W. J. Hawioy presided. Tho report of tho Commiteo was as follows : —Your Committee havo plooauro in presenting the eighteenth annual report and balance sheet, and take this opportunity of making a fow comments. The total subscriptions collected for the year amount to £sl 5a ; the other items of receipt being £9 11s from the piDg-pong tournament and £3 17s, balance of proceeds from tho dance held the previous year. There are no special items in tho expenditure to roport on. The item labor iB heavier than usual on account of the work done in the past winter on the courts in the way of top dressing and sowing down the bare patches. Included in tho payments is over £ls from the previous year, but against this we owe £23 15s 2d for tho cost of tho custodian’s whare and interest on loan, etc., £6 3s, but the outstanding subscriptions for last year, not collected, more than cover this, so that we are in a
better position than a first glance at the balanoo-sheet shows, as wo also have £3 19s Id cash in hand. During the past season your Club had matches against the Te Rau College team and a team from the Hawke’s Bay Tennis Club, and were successful iu both matches. The Club championship matches were won by Mrs Watsoq and Mr Barlow, and as these two players have now won three years in succession, the Championship Cups havo become their property, They both fully deserved their win 3, as they are much ahead of the next players. The Club hope that some sports can be found to donate new cups to play for, as they caused a lot of interest in tennis, and tho competitions for them wore open to any player in the three counties of Cook, Waiapu, and Wairoa. The thanks of tho Club are due to Messrs G. Grant, H. N. Watson, and H. G. Watson for their donations to the Club funds last year, and to those few members who worked so hard to make the ping-pong tournament a sueoess. The general lack of interest shown by tho majority of the members is disheartening to those few who worked their utmost for the Club, and your Committee think that
this has cftly to be pointed out, and all merabers will work to make any special means taken to increase the reveuue of the Club a success. As mentioned previously, the Courts have all had special attention paid to them during the past winter, and your Committee ventures to think that members will have courts to play on equal to , any in the colony. In conclusion, the Committee wish tc place on record their appreciation of the teas provided by tho ladies of an afternoon, and trust that an extra good season will be had this year. The balance-sheet showed receipts totalling £72 15s 6d, expenditure £65 16s sd, balance cash in bank £6 19s Id; assets over liabilities £lB6 os 4d.
