IMPECUNIOUS BOARD. (Per Press Association.) Wellington, last night. Tho Wellington Education Board being now under liabilities to contractors to tho extent of £2846, and, having no funds to meot its responsibility, has decided to again wait on tho Minister of Education in regard to tho position.
A CHINAMAN’S DEATH. A Chinaman named Joe Haw, aged 85 years, was found in a state of collapse in Taranaki stroot yesterday morning, with a wound on his hoad. He died in tho hospital last night. It is not known how ho was injured, but possibly it was by falling on the footpath after opium smoking.
A SENSIBLE PAUSE. Tho City Council last night temporarily shelved tho proposal to carry electric tram linos through the Basin Reservo, and negatived a recommendation that certain parts of tho town belt should bo leased for building purposes. CALEDONIAN SOCIETIES.
Tho annual conference of delegates of Clubs affiliated to the New Zealand Caledonian Societies’ Association was hold last night. Stratford and Inglewood Societies wore affiliated to tho Association. A deputation from tho League of Whoelmen waited on the Association to urge that the Association either join the League or else hold cycle races at societies’ sports under its rules. Somo delegates said tho League had so many officials that their presence became objeetionablo. The meeting appointed a sub-committee to report on the Bubject. It was docided that tho next championship meeting bo held at Invercargill. Mr R. D. D. McLean, of Hawke’s Bay, was re-elected President, and Mr Ulic Shannon was re-appointed official haodicapper. Later. —Tho Caledonian Societies’ Association to-day decided to enter into a reciprocal arrangement with tho League of Wheelmen in regard to the control of cycle races at sports meetings held by affiliated societies. It was decided that the unpaid forfeit list be published in the New Zealand Mail.
OPEN CHURCHES. The Anglican Synod to-day approved of the recommendation being made to incumbents and churchwardens throughout the diocese to allow churohes in their care to remain unlocked during the week.
