FEDERAL POLITICS.
HIGH COUET JUDGESHIPSBy Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright.) Melbourne, Sept. 25.
Tho Argus says Mr Donkin will not bave tho personal ascendancy in the Cabinet that Sir E. Barton enjoyed. The Government has little hope of escapo from subjection to tho Labor party with Mr Deakin as its head. There are few lengths to which the Labor party would go that he would not willingly follow. Tho Ministry by withdrawals has lost strength to a very dangerous extent. The Ago is joyful over possessing a Victorian Primo Minister.
Tho Daily Telegraph commenting on the High Court, and, tho action of two Ministers in leaving the Government on tho eve of tho elections and securing positions for themsolves, says: “It is much to bo regretted that tho first Federal Parliament should end with such an exhibition of irresponsibility, and that the High Court should bo cradled in party politics of this unlovely kind. It is equally deplorable that these appointments -are unsatisfactory. That of Sir Samuel Griffiths as Chief Justice is tho redeeming feature of tho situation. Tho leadership of tho Government has gone to the man who has done the most to earn tho distinction.”
The Herald considers tho personnel of the Court loaves little to bo desired. In regard to tho changos in tho Ministy, it doos not appear clear that Hew South Wales has benefited. The Herald looks upon Mr Chapman’s appointment as an insult to the State.
