EAST COAST NEWS

TUPAROA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) We have had quite a chapter of accidents lately, such as persons spraining their logs and arms, horses bolting and boats smashed, etc. On Monday, while driving a load of ' timber from Matahiia to Kinirere, the king bolt of the waggon came loose, and the horses immediately took fright and bolted.' The driver got somewhat entangled with the reins, but except for a severe shaking received no serious injury; one of the horses was much hurt.

On Wednesday 16th the Herald put in her much-needed, appearance. In landing passengers and cargo one of ;he boats capsized, and a girl passenger had a narrow escape of being drowned. Two boats put off from the steamer, the first containing passengers and cargo, namely, two men, two women, and four or five small children. Although there was a big roll and fairly large breakers this boat was lucky enough to land safely, except for the passengers getting a slight wetting, but the second boat fared worse. It contained cargo and one girl passenger, upon nearing the shore the boat got bumped on a rock. The little girl was precipitated into the water, but owing to the prompt manner in which two of the Bailors went to her aid she was soon brought to shore, although she received a nasty shock and a very unhappy experience. To prevent such occurrences like this surely it would be advisable to leave the landing of passengers to the discretion of the sailors ; for on this occasion the sea, though calm far out, was far from being so near shore. Owing to this mishap the Herald was forced to go to Gisborne and procure another surf-boat while the present one is undergoing repairs here. This accident confirms the statement made in a previous issue of the Times re necessity for life-saving apparatus being provided down at the landing. On Saturday the Herald landed several tons of cargo, and then made her way to Awanui.
