Captain Edwin telegraphed at 1.5 yesterday afternoon “ Strong winds to gale from between north-west and west and south ; glass rise; tides good; expect rain.” East Cape advised yesterday: “N. W. light wind-; barometer, 21’92; thermometer, 59 ;. foggy ; good tides ; heavy sea ; thick fog last 24 hours.” Light variable breezes and close muggy weather were experienced in the colony yesterday. Rain was reported at Wellington, Nelson, and \Ve3tport; drizzling rain at Koikoura, Lyttelton, Port Chalmers, and Nuggets ; and passing showers at Christchurch. There was a rough sea at Farewell Spit and Hokitika; heavy swell at Port Chalmers ; smooth to moderate elsewhere.
