COMMERCIAL.

By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright^ London, Sept. 21. At the wool sales competition is spirited. Prices are unchanged.

The manager of the IJuion Bank of Australia kindly supplies us with Messrs Henry S. Fitter and fcjons’-report for New Zealand mail, datod August 15, 1903 “ Although' the mouth opened with a few fine and summer-like days, wo have had during week very heavy storms and floods. Such unseasonable weather causes a great depression in trade generally. The folks are now leaving town in large numbers, and the meat market will have a very quiet time for fcbo next few weeks, Tne supply of Scotch and Home-killed mutton, although not heavy, has been fully up to the demand, and quotations are rather lower. The New Zealand mutton trade continues favorable, for, although the demand just now is not so great, the lighter arrivals and the temporary shortage of Biver Plate sheep have caused an advance in prices, especially for secondary sheop. The very heavy arrivals of New Zealand lambs last week (about 170,000 in four ships) has had rather a depressing effect on tho trade, for, with a declining demand, buyers are expecting lower prices, but, as stocks on hand were comparatively light, we think prices should bo fairly well maintained. Very much, however, will depend upon the quantities yet to arrive. American beef has come to hand in moderate quantities ; supply about equal to demand. There is rather more Now Zealand beef on baud just now; the demand is not active, and prices have rather a weakening tendency. To-day’s prices are as follows :—Scotch sheep 7d to Bd, English 6£d to 7d, ewes 4£d to sd, Canterbury (N.Z.) sheep 3Jd to Wellington to 4d, Gisborne ofd to 4d, Biver Plate sheep Sijd to 4d, Canterbury (N.Z.) lambs 5d to s£d, Wellington (N.Z). iambs 4Jd to Sjd, American beef, bind quarters s ; j:d to fore B£d to 3id, Argentine beef, hind quarters to 4£d, fore 24<3 to 2sd, New Zealand beef, hind quarters 3jjd to 4|d, fore to 2-jd.
