REPLY TO THE MAYOR.

(To the Editor Gisborne Times.)

Sib, —Referring to Mr Townley’s letter in last night’s paper, why did Mr Townley in his first communication to the paper quote Mr Mestayer’s estimate of an 8-inch main when he now assures us the Council are going to put down a 12 inch main, and why did he not have it specified on the voting paper that there will be a 12-inch main as per last voting paper, and why did he vote against the Council fixing a 12-inch main ? Mr Townley assures us that a reservoir only holding 30 million gallons and town mains of only one to six inches diameter will be sufficient for the town for the next 20 years, as mentioned in his letter last night. If so, surely he cannot be very optimistic as to our future. —I am, etc., E. G. Matthews.
