PARLIAMENTARY.
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last night,
The Houbb met at 7.30. CHAMBERLAIN’S RESIGNATION,
Mr Seddon moved tho following resolution : “ That this House desires to express its groat rogret at the retirement from office, and to place on record its appreciation of tho distinguished and patriotic*services rendered to the Empire by the Right Hon. Joseph Chamberlain, as Secrotary of State for the Colonies, to whom we owe tho inauguration of tho great colonial policy, which he carried out with conspicuous tact and ability, thus securing a cordial relationship and mutual understanding between the Colonies and the Motherland, to the great advantage of tho Empire.” Mr Seddon referred at length to Mr Chamberlain’s services on behalf of the Empire as Secretary of State for the Colonies.
Mr Massey, Leader of the Opposition, endorsed Mr Seddon’s sontiments, and hoped that Mr Chamberlain’s retirement would be only temporary.
Mr Bedford did not wish to detract from Mr Chamberlain's great services to the Empire, but ho deprecated the motion as tending to endorse Mr Chamberlain's-fiscal proposals. Messrs Dutbio and Ell also opposed tha motion.
After three hours’ debate the motion was carried by 52 to 2 (Messrs Bedford and Eil).
