ROAD. In dealing with the necessity of having the Hangaroa-Waikaremoana road Mr J. Ollivier reviewed the benefits of Waikaremoana as a tourist resort and sporting ground. He emphasised the necessity of Gisborne controlling the tourist traffic of Waikaremoana because it was nearer than Napier. As far as scenery was concerned Gisborne was much ahead of Napier. In the district some of the finest health resorts in the colony were to be found, amongst which we might might mention Waipiro and Morere Hot Springs, and the grand scenic attractions of the Motu. The Te Reinga Falls were also a magnificent spectacle. Mr Mooney considered that on the road to Waikaremoana some of the finest scenery in the colony was to be found. He thought that the Tourist Department should have the bush preserved both for its beauty aud as a home for birds. At the crossing on the Hangaroa road a reserve should be obtained to build ah accommodation house. This would be within easy distance of Waikaremoana and also the Puketorimo hills, which disclosed from their summit a fine view of country in Hawke’s Bay, Poverty Bay, and MountjHikurangi, as ajsporting ground it would be found better than Waikaremoana. A considerable amount of deer were beginning to come that way, which would tend to induce sporting men. The Chairman proposed, and Mr Patterson seconded “ That the Government he requested to widen the bridle track, portion of the Gisborne HuDga-roa-Waikaremoana road, so as. to encourage the tourist traffic, also to establish a branch office of the Tourist Department in Gisborne.” It was further resolved “ That the Government be requested to preserve about IQQ acres on the Rukituri river on the Hangaroa-Waikaremoana road, for a tourist accommodation house and resort, also 2000 acres on Puketorimo hill as a natural review and bird resort.”
COAST ROADS. Dir Mooney brought up the matter of the Coast roads being metalled.
Members were of opinion that as the roads were summer ones the attention of the Government should be directed to the opening of roads for settlors ja tho back blocks,
