METAL.
(To the Editor Gisborne Times.)
Sir, —In your last report of the Borough Council meeting, under the heading 11 Metal,” Cr Morrison is credited with the statement that “he understood the County Engineer considered one and a-half yards of Kaiti stone equivalent for repairing purposes to one yard of Patutabi quarry metal.” I may say that that gentleman has been misinformed, as I have never expressed any comparison. My opinion from three years’ careful observation of the Kaiti stone is that it is only fit for suburban roads and that for Borough purposes it is dear at any price, as it goes at once into mud in damp weather and grinds to dust in dry weather. Although the Patutabi metal is not by any means first-class, I think the Council will regret the experiment if they substitute Kaiti stone for borough repairs; and, as regards the County Council’s suburban roads, I hope at an early date to uso Karaka shingle, as soon as it can be obtained at a reasonable cost. —I am, etc., DeG. Fraser, County Engineer.
