The Sierra loft San Francisco on the 27th insb., at 2 p.m. The Matawhero School Committee meet this evening. Tho annual meeting of the Farmers Union will bo hold to-day. The adjourned meeting of the Poverty Bay Hunt Club will bo hold at 11 o’clock this morning. The Acclimatisation Society meet at 2 o'clock this aftornoon, when important business iB to bo transacted. At the Theatro Royal to-night the famous American Comedy Company will stage “ Where is Cobb ?” The anthem at the Holy Trinity Church to-morrow evening will be “ The Radiant Morn Hath Passed Away ” (Woodward). The service at Mangapapa school on Sunday afternoon, at 2 30, will be conducted by Rev. B. F. Rothwell. A plain and fancy dress social will be held in the Academy of Music on Wednesday overling next. Music will be provided by Mr A. E. James’ orchestra. The Matawhero school cadets hold a special parade on Thursday afternoon, under Lieut. Lewis, drill instructor of the Poverty Bay district. The boys presented a soldierly appearance in their new uniforms, and displayed a keen interest in their drill, A Native named Ilarauria was convicted at the Police Court yesterday, of obtaining liquor from tho Albion Hotel whilst under a prohibition order. He was fined £5 and costs, in default 14 days’imprisonment with hard labor. On the motion of Cr Clayton, the County Council have decided to ask the Government to arrange for Mr Hancock, the American electrical expert, to visit this district for the purpose of reporting upon the water power in this district. Tho programme to be presented at the Matawhero School concert on Thursday next is, we understand, to be of a varied an<? attractive nature, comprising drill evolutions by the tmd songs, recitations; etc. A feature will ba tbe dialogue “ Miss Burton’s Troubies,” in which a number of ladies and gentlemen take part. The subjects of Mr Rothwell’s sermons at Wesley Church on Sunday will be Morning, “ Christ, the Power of God ”; evening, “A Silent Domestic Tragedy; Tbe Hero of Last Sunday Night Out of His Chair." Miss Golding will sing the offertory solo, and the choir wiil render the usual special music.

Country residents are notified that the train which usually leaves town at 9.30 on Saturday evening will not leave tonight till 10.30, so as to enable those who .are anxious to see the performance of ‘•Where is Cobb?” The management promise that tho play will cofl.elpdo at 10.15 sharp, thereby leaving ample time for those who want to catch the train. A farewell social was tendered to Mr E. Mayo, schoolmaster at Tiniroto, on Wednesday last, on the occasion of his departure for Morore, to which school he has been appointed. During tho evening soogs were contributed Misses Patterson (3), Mrs Spence, Messrs Spence, W. Wbyte, Berry, and Glassford, aDd recitations by Messrs Berry, Mayo, #nd Watt. The County County yesterday decided to give what assistance they could to any section of the public desirous of constructing a private tramway under the Tramways Act. The matter was introduced by Cr Clayton, who pointed out that there wan a great deal of misapprehension on the subject. If any district cared to rate itself for the purpose the Council would o-tyo what assistance it could.

At the Police Court yesterday Sir W. A. Barton, S.M-. presided. Two offenders for drunkenness were dealt with in the usual manner. A native who was charged with being found drunk in Gladstone Boad whilst under a prohibition order was convicted and lined £3 and costs, in default 14 days’ hard labor in Gisborne gaol. Margaret Ann Whitfield was committed for trial for an aggravated assault upon her husband. . Sergt. Siddells appeared for the prosecution, and Mr G. Lysnar for defendant.

Our Whatatutu correspondent tolagraphed yesterday : A four-roomed house, the property of Mr Edward Devery, situated on the Whatatutu road, was totally destroyed by fire last evening. The family were away at Te Karaka at a dance at the time. The fire was observed by Mr Heaphy, who lives on a small place on the farm, and he succeeded in saving a few articles of furniture. The building was insured for £125, and the furniture for £75 in the South British office.

The alarm of fire raised last evening caused a good deal of excitement through? out the town. The fire proved to he in Boebuck road, a two-roomed house belong, ing to Mr Charles Catton being completely destroyed. It appears that Mr Catton went into the house of his son-in-law, Mr E. Church, who lives close by, to spend the evening, leaving a small fire burning in the stove, and at about eight o'clock discovered the fire. Mr Catton estimates his loss at over £IOO. Amongst other things ho lost a number of yaluable papers.

Those desirous of witnessing a first-class game of Rugby football should attend the Waiapu - Poverty Bay representative match at Victoria Domain this aftornoon. Play commences at 3 o’clock. Mr J. M. Souls,” and in the evening the subject of lecture will be “ Gambling at Our Street Corners; a Young Man Smitten Down in the Shambles of Sin by the Pole-axe of Gambling.” Young men specially invited. The Whataupoko Road Board met yesterday afternoon, there being present: The Chairman (Mr A. F. Matthews), and Messrs Hamon, Sievwright, Lysnar, McConnell and Beere (secretary). In respouce to an application from the Beautifying Association to plant trees along the Riverside Road, it was decided to grant the request. Mr A. R. Wyllie, poundkeeper, wrote re the complaint lodged with the Board by Messrs Reynolds Bros, that he had impounded two of their calves. Messrs Lysnar and Sievwright considered they should uphold their poundkeeper for the splendid way in which he had carried out his duties. It was resolved that the Board could Dot see its way to contribute more than £ls towards a health inspector a 3 arranged by the conference of local bodies. Mr Wyllie tendered his resignation as poundkeeper owiDg to tho small salary. A committee 1 was set up to go iuto the ways and means of the Board, and also to consider the advisability of erecting a cottage on the pound section. The Board decided to ask Mr Wyllie to carry out his duties for another month. Mr S. Hall applied for a 1 refund of 9s,alleged to have been paid in error. The Board declined to entertain the claim. Tho Chairman drew attention to the fact of several people in Clifford streot throwing slops into the drains. It p was decided that they be written to and cautioned. Mr Sievwright’s notice of motion was brought forward re amalgamation, and on his own application withdrawn for the time being in order that the matter could be gone carefully into.
