CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
THE PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS. Per Press Association. Christchurch, last night. Mr A. H. Turnbull, President of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, speaking at the annual meeting to-day, said it seemed evident that there was no reasonable expectation in the very near future of increasing to any extent tho value of the export business, upon which Canterbury was practically dependent. It might reasonably bo hoped, £9 far as the. province was concerned, to at leji?t maintain the present position and standard without fear of an acute depression or financial strin- 1 goncy, though there was nothing on the horizon to induce an expectation of anything better. Ho spoke in favor of preferential tr?.d° w 'th Great Britain, and urged organisation on the part of both workers and employers, The effect of the Arbitration Court had certainly been to raise the standard and improve the position on both sides throughout thd polony, if only in the direction of obtaln.'rc uniformity. The present-State Eire Insurance Bill, he thought, should be acceptable.
