HARBOR BOARD
The monthly meeting of tho Board was held yesterday afternoon, there being present : Messrs Townley (Chairman), Cooper, Clark, Sicvwright, Whinray, Matthewson, and Captain Tucker. PINNACLE ROCKS.
A reply was received that there was m objection to the Torpedo Corps removing tho pinnacle rock if the Board defrayed the cost. Mr Cooper : What is the cost ? Tho Chairman : That depends on how much you havo done. Mr Whinray : I think we should have the work done and chance tho cost. Mr Sicvwright: I suppose that is what we will have to do, but we might ask them to bear half tho cost.
The Chairman said tho matter bad been mentioned by the deputation, but tho Minister said ho thought tho Board would havo to bear the cost. Mr Whinray movod that tho Corps be obtained when available. Mr Matthewson said they should have the rocks defined as pinnacles ; there was no use of sotting to work on flat rocks. , After further remarks tho Chairman seconded tho motion. Mr Matthewson : Why not have soundings taken first ? Mr Whinray : It has been done. Captain Tucker read the depths from tho chart propared. The proposal was agreed to, the understanding being that pinnacles affecting the aueborage and entrance should be dealt with. A tracing of the chart prepared was received from the Marine Department. TIMBER.
Advice of the shipment of timber by tho scow Hawk' was received. To make up tho load some timber not according to specifications, totara, was sent, which the Board had the option to take at 20s ; the stated tender price was 22s 6d. The Chairman and Mr Whinray said it would bo wise to take the extra lot, which was agreed to. The Overseer said that the timber was all of fair quality ; three piles had been condemned. WEIGHBRIDGE-KEEPER,
Mr Dawson, tho weighbridge-keeper, applied for an increase of salary, the work having much increased; the salary was £lO5. , The Chairman and Mr Matthewson spoke in a complimentary way of the work done. Captain Tucker thought th& salary was fair ; neither too high nor too low. The Chairman said that all his time was taken up. Mr Cooper: If he is a good man we ought to give him more ; if not, kick him out. The Chairman: He is a good man. Mr Siovvvright: Ho ought to receive 8s
a day. On the motion of Mr Cooper, seconded by Mr Sievwrigbt, it was resolved to increaso the salary to £2 103-per week. PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE. Your Committee mot on the 25th inst., when there were present: Tho Chairman, and Messrs Cooper, Hepburn, Tucker, and Whinray, and after discussing the various matters referred to them, beg to roport as follows : Re slip charges : They recommond. for the pvosont that the charges for the use of tho slip by coastal schooners, lighters, and small craft shall be the same as -the Lyttelton Harbor Board ; steamers to be specially arranged for. Compensation for land : With regard to land taken for loading lights, they recommend tho Board to pay for the same at tho rate of £2OO per aero. Specification western training wall extension : Your Committee recommend the adoption of specifications as revised by them and approved by Board’s solicitor.
Office: Your Committee recommend that competitive designs be called for a new brick building, giving tho necessary accommodation, the cost of which would bo about £BSO, and that the present buildings be sold. Mr Siovvvright moved tho adoption of the report, so long as the solicitor made it clear that the engineer referred to was Mr McLeod. Continued on page 4.
