FREIGHTS TO AUSTRALIA

A GERMAN MANAGER COMPLAINS

By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Received 11.49 p.m., Aug. 26. Sydney, Aug. 26. The manager of the North German Lloyds in an interview, referred to the proposed restrictions on foreign vessels by the Commonwealth. He said the wages paid seamen in Inter-State steamers was the highest in the world. The attitude of local owners on the question might be summarised in the sentence : “ We might give you more wages if you help us to get the deep sea ships out of the trade. Australasian coastal companies already had a monopoly of freight, and their arrangements were much to the same effect as trust freight. To Bremen wool was 10s per ton, and ore 15s, while the local companies got 27s 6d to Fremantle. If the Federal Government compelled . foroign companies to pay higher wages the companies might carry Australian freights. The companies would try to find ways and moans to compensate themselves for higher wages.
