NEWTOWN ELECTION

(Per Press Association.) Auckland, last night. A public meeting under the auspices of the New Zealand Alliance was held tonight to protest against tho inaction of tho Government with regard to the Newtown licensing question. The Rev. C. H. Garland, President of the Local Prohibition League, prosided, and the mooting was addressed by several prominent advocates for prohibition. A resolution on the same terms as that passed at Dunedin last week was passed, tho section referring to obstruction ” by tho Government being omitted. The Dunedin resolution affirming tho necessity for amending tho legislation in the direction of a second poll whon the first was daelared void, the repeal of the (clause requriing half the electors to vote to make local option valid when there is no Parliamentary contest, and tho infliction of penalties on officials committing or permitting breaches of ,the law was also carried. It was decided to forward tho resolutions to the Premier and local members of the House. There was a largo and enthusiastic attendance. The spoakers emphasised the fact that the present deadlock was not a party or even a temperance question, but one of preserving democratic princples and rights of majority.
