NIGERIAN EXPEDITION.
SEVERE LESSON GIVEN TO. THE NATIVES.

It is officially announced that Mr 11. Barlow, one ofi the assistant District Commissioners in Nigeria, reports that a British column, consisting of 30 white men and 300 rank and file, four Maxims, and two smaller guns, successfully attacked the town of Durmi on the morning of July 27. -Fighting lasted until dark. The opposition of the natives was most determined. House-to-house fighting took place throughout the day. The town was completely destroyed, and the bodies of seven hundred of the enemy were counted, including those of the deported Sultan of Sokoto and the majority of his chiefs. The British losses were : Killed: Major Marish, four rank and file, and six carriers. Wounded : Captain ~ HamiltonBrowne, severely, but progressing favorably ; Major Plummer and Captain Lewis, slightly sixty-two rank and file, and seven carriers.
