Consols ave at 90J. At the tallow sales 775 casks were offered, and 650 sold. Prices are unchanged. Pec Press Association. Wellington, last night. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following market report* from Mr Gow, commercial agent , for the colony in South Africa, dated Durban, August 18th :—Potatoes : Market very steady ; prices £lO spot, duty paid. Arrivals from Madeira and Adelaide are costing £5 15s to £l6 10s, c.i.f. French supplies are expected within three weeks. There should be a good enquiry for Early Rose for the next three months. The present vulue is 19s per 1501 b. Onions are firmer. Spot quotations are : Australian, £8 10s in bond, 2£d per lb, duty paid ; 4 Spanish, £8 per ton in bond. The very latest reports concerning butter are to the effect that the market is very weak, owing to drops in Australia and heavy stocks locally held, amounting to 36,000 cases. Operators are attempting to off-load-in view of the good prospects of an early . supply, and further reductions of prices in Australia. The prices of prime quality are : Good-sized parcels can' be bought at lid, medium 9d, poor 6d, all in bond. There is very little indenting, except for some extra special quality in one or two well-known brands. Napier, last night. The Colonial Consignment and Distributing Company cable : First quality lamb and hinds and fores of beef have declined 1 Bd. To-day’s quotations are: Canterbury mutton, 4|d ; Napier, Wellington, and North, 4d ; lamb, first quality, 5 l-Bd, seconds 5d ; beef, hinds 4d, fores 24d. WAERENGA-A-HIKA STOCK SALE. At the WaereDga-a-hika yards yesterday Messrs Common, Shelton and Co. and Dalgety and Co. held their monthly s'ales, there being a fairly largo attendance. | Compared with previous sales prices were fully maintained. There was good request for fat cattle, dairy cows, and young stock of good quality. Inferior sorts were neglected. The yarding consisted of over a hundred head of cattle, but no sheep. Dairy cows sold from £6 53 to £8 ss, fat * bullocks £8 2s 6d to £9, a line of twenty averaging £8 11s; good weaners sold at £2 11s, and calves at £2. Bacon pigs made up to 41s. The nest sale will be held on Thursday, September 10th. \ TALLOW MARKET.
Messrs Dalgety and Co. yesterday received the following cablegram from their London house: “ Since our last cable prices for low and inferior descriptions of tallow are higher by threepence; other descriptions unchanged,”
