AN EDITOR’S DEATH
(Per Press Association.) Wanganui, last night,
Mr James Duigan. editor of the Wanganui Herald, died this morning, after a short illness, aged 60. Deceased was born in Ireland, and came to Australia when seven years of age. In the early days he spent a good deal of time with his father, who was a shipmaster, on the sea. Afterwards he engaged in survey work iii Victoria, and then in journalism in Melbourne. He nest joined the Victorian Telegraph Department, and assisted in laying the cable from Viotoria to Tasmania, and later on came to New Zealand. After settling in this colony he was appointed postmaster at Charleston, and was subsequently transferred to Wanganui, where he purchased the Chronicle and carried it on for a number of years. He afterwards sold out and purchased an interest in several steamers trading between here and the West Coast of the South Island, and was also proprietor of the Wanganui flour mills. Ho joined the Herald as editor in 1891, and continued in that position up to the time of his death. Deceased was a Fellow of the Geological Society. He leaves a wife (a daughter of the late Magistrate, Mr Chas. Broad) and 12 children.
