Christchurch, last night. Tho munioipal abattoirs at Sookburn were opened to day by tho Hon. H. F. ' Wigram, Mayor of Christchurch, in the presence of a large number of butchers, citizens, and representatives of local bodies. The abattoirs have cost about £21,000, and are quite up-to-date in all respects, being supplied with friction hoisting gear for bullooks, and other modern appliances. The butchers are not unanimous in regard to using the institution, as some of them intend to use slaughter-houses _ at the freezing works. 'The City Council, however, intends to try to oompel the freezing companies to kill for looal consumption at the public abattoirs. .. -
