A fire occurred at Rouse, I-lurrel, and Co.’s coach-building works early this morning, Considerable damage was done, but the brigade checked it from developing into a serious conflagration. The fire broke out in the stock-room, and was confined to it. Mr Hurrell thinks that the damage amounts to nearly £IOOO. The insurances on the building arc £IOOO in the South British ; machinery, £SOO in the South British ; stock, £2255 in the South British, £750 in the National, £SOO in the Alliance, and. £375 in the Northern. . TIiVIARU, last night. .The Board of Education to-day resolved that in cases where Government Health Officer demands expensive alterations to schools, the ■Education Department should give some financial assistance. The Chairman of the Board remarked that he thought the Premier ‘’needlessly. insulted Education Boards by threatening to send incidental grants to the Committees direct. Tlveo. F. Litchwork pleaded guilty; to a breach of the Post Office Act. He signed 'a statement that he had sent a letter to his wife, containing £sj His wife complained to the Post Office that she had never received it. Defendant afterwards ■admitted that he had never sent it. He was committed to the Supreme 'Court for sentence. HAWERA’S TOWN CLERK. I-lAWBRA, last night. From 57 applications that of Mr Meek, Government auditor, was selected for the position of ,Town Clerk. NELSON NEWS. NELSON, last night.■By a fire at Bert Tasker’s drapery shop, I-lardy street, last evening, damage was done to the stock to the extent of seven hundred pounds over the insurances. It is not known how the fire originated, it being a half-holiday. The insurances arc in the New Zealand, Royal, and -United, £SOO each. The building was not much damaged. It was owned by W. IA ; . Rough-ton. A-heavy southerly gale, with rain,, is prevailing. PAINFUL INJURIES. DUNEDIN, last night.
The youngest daughter of Mr A. 'Taylor, of Alexandra South, was severely burned through her clothes catching fire. Her recovery, is doubted.
