I shall have a further opportunity tomorrow of making my final selection for 'the Grand National Hurdle Bace (says the Auckland Star Special of Tuesday.) In the meantime I may say that Battleaxe still reigns a strong favorite, and that Buku has come into prominence on the strength of some good work on the tracks. The latter is hardly ready, I fear, otherwise he might keop the stake at Biccarton. Mars, Waiwera, Slow Tom, and Tradewind are all well, and so is Hurricane; but the latter’s chance has been discounted by his having been schooled over the fences. At present I think the winner will come from among the horses which I have mentioned.
Straybird finished fourth in the Grand National Steeplechase run at Christchurch on Tuesday.
A Chatham fishmonger and fried-fish shopkoepor, Maria Balderston, who exposed for sale 249 pieces of bad fish, was fined 2s per piece, making, with costs, a penalty of £26 4s.
A sale of goods seized by the Customs authorities held at Melbourne realised £2395. Included in the goods were 40,000 yards of lace, which sold for £1195. A feature of the report of the Buskin Museum, Sheffield, for the year ending March 25 is the largely-increased attendance of visitors. In the previous year these numbered 40,580; this year that figure rose to 58,325. A footless race of men is said to have been discovered in New Guinea. They live in tho midst of lakes, moving about in little canoes and possessing a few cabins built on wood piles. Their feet are so undeveloped as to be practically useless for walking. Australian teachers are said to be “ giving satisfaction ” in South Africa so much so that they have been pressed to remain in the new colonies. From their colonial experience they naturally provo adaptable to the conditions of life, and the special circumstances of education in an unsettled country. v . ..
