The railway report shows the earning to be £1,078,000, working expenses £631,000, percentage of working expenses to earnings .59.
THE KANAKA. MELBOURNE, August 12 In respect to the Duke of Marlborough's statement in regard to Kanakas, Sir E. Barton states that he does not know what the regulations referred to are. Kanakas are deported under the Queensland State, law.
RETRENCHMENT. MELBOURNE, August 12
Owing to the number of dismissals officials of the Mines Department fear a wholesale retrenchment, but the Government only propose to dispense .with superfluous officers.
