I Dunedin, last night. I Obituary: John Douglas, of Mount I Royal, near Palmerston, aged 74. I Hughes, second officer, and McCallum, third engineer, of the Corinna, who pleaded guilty to theft, tho cases oxtending over a I considerable period, wore released on probation. Tho hotel bars in Bruce district are reported to be open for the sale of liquor this morning. It has been rumored for several days that the hotelkeepers, following tho examplo of tho Newtown publicans, intended to take this step. Later news says that the hotelkeepers are only soiling non-intoxicants-
George McLuis, for overloading the La Bella so as to submerge tho Plimsoll mark, was fined £lO. LATE MR CARGILL.
Tho funeral of the late Mr E. B. Cargill, which took place to-day, was very largely attended. The gathering was probably the largest sinco the Rev. Dr. Stuart’s funeral. The gathering was a representative one. PROHIBITION.
Although the closed hotels in tho Bruce district have re-opened their bars, so far as is known only temperance drinks wore served. DREDGING. No less than five dredging companies have declared dividends—Hartley and Riley 10s, Cromwell 2s 6d, Enterprise 2s, Sailor’s Bend Is, Electric Is. The Manuherika dredge’s mid-week wash up was 'lß9oz 4dwt.
