NEW PLYMOUTH, last night. At a meeting of local ‘ barristers and solicitors this afternoon, Mr A. I-I. Holmes, Clerk of the Court, who lis leaving to take a similar position in Wellington, was ■ presented with a handsome set of silver plate (consisting of, tea kettle, with lamp, cake dish, cake tray, and entree dishes), as a mark of the great esteem in which he is held by the profession. I In making the presentation, Mr O. Samuel, President of the local Law Society, regretted the loss of Mr Holmes’ services, hut congratulated him on his promotion. He warmly ' eulogised his ability, courtesy, and willingness to ■ assist, not only the profession, but the public, and he praised Mr Holmes’ method of indexing cases, whereby the profession ; was greatly assisted. Several mem-, bers present spoke in the same strain, as did Mr Stanford, S.M., who greatly regretted the loss of Mr Holmes’ services. All present wished him/ success in his new sphere and hoped soon to see him elevated to. the Bench. The proceedings were most cordial. Mr Holmes also received presentations from the staff of the S.M. I Court, from the Taranaki Guards, in which he held the position of first I lieutenant, and from the physical I drill sejuad of, the same company. Pie leaves by the m'ail train to-mor-row, to take up bis new duties.
