'The Department of Industries and Commerce has received tbo following cablegram from tho Agent-General, dated London, August Bth: Mutton market very firm, though the trade at Smithfield is quiet. The average prices to-day are: ■ Canterbury brands 4jd per lb, Dunodin, Southland, and Wellington Meat Export Company 4id, for other North Island brands 4d, ewes 3Jd ; River Plate mutton 3Jd to 4d, Tho lamb markot has been 1 favorably affected by the advance in mutton. Prices are firmer. Average prices to-day arc: Canterbury brand sjd per lb, brands other than Canterbury 5 I-6tb, tegs 4j|d, River Plato lamb 4Jd. Tho beef market is steadier. Hind-quarters of New Zealand beef are quoted at 4Jd per lb, fores 2Jd. Thero is a better demand for ■Won,.Zealand butter. The average price

XN * of choicest brands ' to-day is 95s perowt; Danish 108 s, Canadian 935, Siberian 85s, Argentine 933. The oheeao market is firmer. The average price of finest Now Zealand is sls per cwt. There is a fair demand for consignments ex Papanui. Canadian is at 48s to 495. The hemp market is steady, with a fair demand for distant deliveries, The price of New Zealand hemp, good fair Wellington grade on spot to day, is £3l per ton; August to September shipments, £3O 15s; October to December shipments, £3O 103. The .present stock is 849 tons, against 724 at thia date last year. Thero aro signs of improvement in the cocksfoot market, but 00 change in prices. The average price of bright clean New Zealand cooksfoot .seed, weighing 17 lb per bushel, is 46s per owt, c.i.f. The London and Amerioan * r ops are estimated to be below the average quantity and quality.
